That's a line from a Traveling Wilburys' song. And that's how I feel about working with kids. Try something -- it doesn't work -- try something else -- it works, great! -- keep doing that, and try something else to add to it...etc. And on a larger scale, administrative people are changing things in an attempt to "get it right"...but they don't keep what works. Sigh.
I sent a letter home with Anna today to give to her grandmother. Hopefully I'll hear back from parents tomorrow or next week, and we can start figuring out plans from there. Both Anna and Gerald like the idea of going to camp to read AND do other fun stuff. Anna is one of those kids who is so sweet and compliant...she has trouble focusing sometimes, which makes it difficult for her (and her teacher) in the classroom. She is in third grade and just turned nine.
Gerald is repeating first grade. He is eight (nine in November). He makes progress like this: one step forward, two steps back, six steps forward, one step back, two steps back...then repeat. If he were a robot he would look at a page of writing and say, "DOES NOT COMPUTE." He gets very frustrated very easily, and I really hope he can go to camp this summer to help him next year. If he can't go to camp, I might ask his mom if I can work with him over the summer. We'll see!
Back to cleaning house!
